Our life right here in Yangzhou is great!  We have satisfied numerous outstanding expats who we now phone call friends. We have a fantastic team of Chinese mentor Assistants as well as other regional good friends as well.  It’s a excellent mix of people from around the world, including America, new Zealand, England, Australia, Russia, Canada as well as of course, China.  Our weeks are spent mentor English for 15-20 hours, checking out new corners of our city, working on our site as well as hanging out with friends.

Dinners out are one of our preferred things to do.  We’ll get a huge group of us together as well as go out to a good Chinese restaurant for a meal.  Eating out in China is much different from  home.  You would never purchase a meal for just yourself.  What occurs is that a person person will take the menu (preferably somebody who can speak Chinese!) as well as will purchase a lot of dishes for the whole table.

One part of food is large right here as well as is implied to be shared.  Each person has a bit bowl as well as will utilize their chopsticks to serve themselves some food from the communal dishes in the center of the table.  Stuffing ourselves with a range of food as well as drinking tons of beer costs about $6/person.  Not as well shabby.

Apart from dinners out, the nightlife in this city consists of home parties, going to lounges or nightclubs as well as listening to our good friend play online music.  We’ve been enjoying our social life right here as well as have been lucky sufficient to be invited to a Chinese-Australian wedding, staggette party, housewarming get-togethers, going away parties, brunch with Chinese families, various birthday celebrations, weekends away as well as soon it will be time to celebrate Christmas with all of the foreigners.

There aren’t any type of English film theaters right here so we download films from the Web as well as view them at home.  There’s no swimming pool, no bowling alley as well as no sporting events.  However, we are doing much more as the locals do – riding our bikes around, costs time in the parks, as well as trying KTV (karaoke!)  We’ve traded in our hockey sticks as well as pucks for badminton rackets as well as birdies.  We don’t have a car, we have one-speed bicycles.  We eat soup, noodles or dumplings for breakfast as well as we sleep on a 1 inch thick mattress.  Oh yes, life is certainly different right here in China.

But the very best part about Yangzhou is the truth that it’s not even on the foreign tourist’s radar. When we walk around, we’re treated like rock stars.  Everyone states hello, everybody looks at us with curious eyes as well as when we trip our bikes around, we practically cause mishaps from people gawking at us.  English isn’t spoken right here so we get by with the fundamental Chinese we have learned, utilizing hand gestures as well as when worse concerns worst, we phone call a bilingual friend.  Many of the western “necessities” as well as comforts aren’t offered here, however we discover the fundamentals that we requirement to make a meal from house if we want.

We wouldn’t want to online in a much more westernized part of China.  We like the truth that we are a few of the only foreigners here.  Living in Yangzhou for the past 5 months has been amazing! We really feel like we are somewhere different as well as are enjoying every moment of it.  We can’t wait to see what the next 7 months has to offer.
